Nearly 4% of U.S. homes have solar panels installed

October 28, 2022

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) has announced that in 2020, 3.7% of single-family homes in the US generated electricity from solar. However the percentage on a regional basis varies widely with the west at 8.9%, northeast at 4.7%, south at 1.7% and midwest at 1.4%.

Have we reached a tipping point? In certain states, the answer is yes but many others are further away from mass adoption. The Inflation Reduction Act will accelerate the adoption of solar by homeowners across the country, moving us closer to the tipping point in many states.

Why is this important?

One of the barriers to adoption of solar is the value it adds to a home. While studies have shown that solar increases the value of a home by an average of 4.1%, the greater the adoption of solar, the better mechanisms we’ll have to assess the value of a solar, providing homeowners another way to recoup a solar investment in addition to energy savings and other incentives.
