Summary

If you’re thinking about home solar, you’ve got a lot of options to consider and choices to make but choosing a solar contractor is likely the most important one.  We wrote an in-depth article on choosing a solar contractor here, but as you can see from the data, there are two important questions to answer before you get started:

  • Are you more comfortable working with a large solar contractor who operates in many states or a smaller solar contractor who primarily serves your local community?
  • Would you prefer to own your system or have a third-party own the system?

If you prefer a third-party to own the system, you’ll want to consider the larger companies, but if you prefer to own your own system, you may want to consider a smaller, local contractor.

Larger home solar contractors tend to rely heavily on third-party ownership (solar leases and solar PPAs) while local installers tend to sell home solar systems that the homeowner owns. As you can see, the top 10 solar contractors in New Jersey are composed of regional and national solar contractors who operate in many states. Even further, three companies installed just under half of all New Jersey home solar systems in 2021:  Trinity Solar, Momentum Solar and Sunrun (including the now acquired Vivint). More than three out of four home solar systems installed by these three companies were a solar lease or solar PPA.  You can read more about solar leases and solar PPAs here, but the bottom line is that homeowners are almost always better off owning their home solar system than having a third-party own it.

So if you decide that you’d be better off owning your own home solar system, how do you find a good reputable local solar contractor?  The best way is word of mouth – a trusted friend or family member who went solar and had a good experience.  If you don’t have someone you trust to rely on, you could do some internet research and read reviews to try to identify a good local contractor.
