Trinity was founded in New Jersey in 1994 as an HVAC company.  Today, Trinity is one of the largest regional home solar contractors, operating in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New Jersey.  Trinity is the largest home solar contractor in New Jersey by a wide margin.

Pro Custom Solar LLC, better known as Momentum Solar, was founded in New Jersey in 2009.  Momentum Solar has since expanded to install home solar systems in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, California and, New Jersey.

Founded in 2007, Sunrun is now the largest installer of home solar systems in the US.  In 2015, Sunrun went public (ticker: RUN) and in 2020 acquired Vivint Solar (the second-largest home solar company in the US).  Note that the information below only includes home solar systems sold and installed directly  by Sunrun. Sunrun also provides solar lease and solar PPA financing to third-party contractors and subsequently takes ownership of and operates these systems. Installation data only includes systems sold and installed by Sunrun and does not include these third-party partners. 

Originally a security system and home automation installer, Vivint’s solar business was created in 2011 and went public in 2014.  From 2013 to 2016, Vivint Solar was the second-largest solar contractor in the country. Then in 2020, Vivint was acquired by Sunrun to create the largest solar contractor in the country. Traditionally, Vivint Solar has relied heavily on door-to-door sales and selling solar leases and PPAs.

Suntuity Solar is one of the eight companies in the Suntuity Group. Suntuity installs residential, commercial, utility, and off-grid solar systems. It’s residential solar business installs home solar systems in Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and New Jersey.

Headquartered in Massachusetts, Bright Planet Solar works exclusively with third-party sales and marketing partners, only installing home solar systems. Bright Planet Solar installs home solar systems in California, Utah, Illinois, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New Jersey.

Founded in 2018 and headquartered in New Jersey, Vision Solar installs residential solar systems in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Massachusetts, Florida, and New Jersey. Frankly, that’s all we can find on them despite their claim to being “one of the fastest growing solar energy companies in the United States.”

SunnyMac was founded in 2009 as an installation-only company for large national solar companies like Sunrun, SolarCity, Sungevity, OneRoof, and SunEdison (note that Sunrun is the only large national company of that list that is still in business).  In 2017, SunnyMac moved to a turnkey model where they sell and install home solar and commercial solar systems. SunnyMac operates in New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. 

Headquartered in California, Freedom Forever uses a combination of in-house and third-party sales to install home solar in 24 states. A relatively new entrant, Freedom Forever installed its first home solar system in New Jersey in 2020 but is growing rapidly.

Green Power Energy was founded in 2009 and installs residential, commercial, and agricultural solar systems in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey. 

Tesla needs no introduction but has been active in New Jersey as SolarCity before SolarCity being acquired by Tesla in 2016.  Shortly after the acquisition, Tesla announced that it had developed a solar roof but has struggled to sell and install it in any significant volume.  Now on version three of its solar roof, Tesla seems to be making progress despite significantly increasing the price of solar roofs in April of 2021. While Tesla continues to sell their standard solar panel system, their market share has dwindled in recent years, as you can see from the numbers below.
